Education Mission

Education Mission Statement Updated Sl-1b174eb

Local Schools

SLEEC’s primary objective is to serve as an outdoor wetlands ecological laboratory providing a window for the public to experience why these ecosystems are so vital to our community and the world at large. Our focus is to engage primary and secondary school students with a safe and outdoor experience. However, visitors of any age will learn and enjoy the natural beauty of the facility and its large ecosystem.

Our dedicated team of professional educators will guide and assist visitors and students with information and hands-on experience needed to continuously monitor and restore this forested ecosystem.

SLEEC is a living, on-going study of our local environment and why its natural resources and proximity to the Mississippi River have attracted explorers through many decades. All visitors are welcome to become a part of this experience.

FIELD TRIPS

Classes will be led through the preserve by our highly trained staff of environmental educators for a hands-on learning experience. Our programming reinforces and brings to life the STEM concepts that students are taught in the classroom. Field trips are correlated to Louisiana Standards of Excellence according to grade level and subject area using academically based curriculum materials.

Teaching Kitchen

SLEEC will be designed to provide a “teaching kitchen” for its students and visitors with a focus on “farm to table” cuisine. The goal of the teaching kitchen is to provide hands-on instruction to students and adults on how to prepare nutritious, delicious, local meals. It is our hope to create a community teaching garden as well.

The teaching kitchen will be part of SLEEC’s conference center and will also be designed as a professional kitchen for events.
